Georg Dorffner MSc Ph.D. is associate Professor at the Section for Artificial Intelligence, Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Intelligent Systems of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Until 2007 he was also the head of the Neural Computation Group at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (ÖFAI). In 1985 he graduated from the Vienna University of Technology with an M.S. in Electrical Engineering/Communication Engineering, as well as an M.S. in Computer Science. In 1989 he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (minor: Linguistics) from Indiana University, USA. In 1994 he received tenure (“Habilitation”) in the field of Artificial Intelligence with a thesis on "Artificial Neural Networks: Theory and Application in Medicine" at the University of Vienna.
Since 1987 Georg Dorffner has successfully led several national and international research projects. His research focus has been on analysis of and pattern recognition in biosignals. Among other project involvements, he was the coordinator of EU-Commission funded projects ANNDEE (Neural Networks for EEG-Processing) and SIESTA (Development of a new standard for sleep analysis). In addition he was a board member of the Special Research Branch (SFB) - “Adaptive Models in Economics and Management Sciences” funded by the Fund for Scientific Research (FWF). There he worked on time series analysis and economic modeling. In addition to other projects in basic research Georg Dorffner has led a number of industrial projects and feasibility studies for Siemens Austria, VA Industrieanlagenbau, EA Generali, etc., and has acted as a consultant for industry.
Georg Dorffner coordinated the entire transition phase from the SIESTA project to the founding of The Siesta Group GmbH and was their managing director from 2001 until early 2014.
